Volunteering at Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary

Please take note of the following before applying:

*We ask that you only apply if you are truly committed and interested in volunteering. It takes a significant amount of staff/volunteer time to train new volunteers and so we ask that you are serious about committing as we will invest time and energy into your training. Those are precious hours that could be spent caring for our animals.

*If you just want to meet the residents/animals-but can’t commit to our minimum volunteer requirements please check out our special events page that are here on the website or on our Facebook page or call and schedule a Farm Visit. We always have something going on at the farm.

*A commitment of 4 shifts per month- (AM: 3 hours per shift or PM: 2 hour shift) with responsibilities that include, feeding, stall/paddock cleaning, watering and general care of the farm. Shift are available for AM from 8:30-11:30 and for PM from 4:00-6:00, 7 days a week in all weather conditions.

*Volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer.

*A volunteer’s primary tasks consist of putting out horses and hay in the morning, cleaning the animals living areas- paddocks and stalls. This means shoveling and scooping lots of poop, scrubbing water buckets and refilling them in the stalls and paddocks, cleaning feed buckets, sweeping areas, replacing bedding, and setting up the stalls for the animals for the evening.

*You must be able to carry/lift 25-30lbs.

*It is very important that you can take direction from a senior volunteer.

*Failure to show up or consistently canceling scheduled shifts can lead to termination from the program.

It is not a glamorous job but it is so rewarding. So if you are still interested in joining our team click on “Contact Us” and someone will be in touch with you to schedule a day to start getting you trained.
